Statement: Islamic Relief Canada commenting on the latest IPC report on Gaza said:

International governments must increase pressure on Israel to end its siege of Gaza and allow sufficient aid in, Islamic Relief says as new analysis shows the specter of famine increasing and hundreds of thousands more people facing starvation as winter approaches.

Today’s new report from the IPC – the leading global authority on food security and nutrition analysis – shows the already desperate situation in Gaza is getting even worse, with the number of people suffering catastrophic levels of hunger set to almost triple from 133,000 to 346,000 in the coming months. Over 1.8 million people – more than 86% of the population – is already at crisis levels of hunger.

Yet as people starve, Israel continues to block vital aid from entering – with the amount of aid allowed in at its lowest level in months, and hundreds of thousands of people in northern Gaza almost completely cut off.

International governments must act decisively to prevent mass famine, yet many of the most powerful are missing in action. Only a ceasefire and an end to Israel’s siege can stop famine and save countless lives.
