Applications for this volunteer abroad opportunity are now closed. We thank all those who applied.

Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Dates of Program: April 21st to April 30th, 2018

This one-week volunteer abroad program is designed in conjunction with Islamic Relief Canada (IRC), Islamic Relief Malaysia, and school teachers. Our volunteers will be filling a gap by providing much-needed support to teachers to implement an educational program geared towards Rohingya refugee children.

The Program:

Between April 21st – April 30th, 2018, volunteers will be leading activities in two school sites in Kuala Lumpur that cater to Rohingya refugee children. One is a weekday school and the other is a weekend school.

Volunteers will be responsible for leading and facilitating several activities that focus on mathematics, science, and improving children’s psychosocial well-being in a variety of fun and interactive ways. This may include art activities, field trips, and sports.

The Fundraising Process:

All selected volunteers will be required to raise a minimum of $2,800 CAD by April 5th, 2018 which will go towards the IR Malaysia education projects. IRC will provide each volunteer with a fundraising package that includes posters, flyers, pledge cards, and fundraising tips. Volunteers will also receive online crowdfunding pages to assist in their fundraising campaigns.

IRC will cover your accommodation in Kuala Lumpur. Please note that flight costs are NOT included in this and it is the responsibility of the volunteer to pay for this flight in addition to the fundraising of $2,800 CAD.

Online registration is open from November 8th, 2017, to December 10th, 2017. During this time frame, IR Canada will be accepting and reviewing applications on a rolling basis. Applicants who are short-listed will be contacted for an interview. Candidates who are selected will undergo a second interview. After these interviews are conducted, applicants will be informed of IR Canada’s decision.

Please note: Due to the overwhelming number of responses, we will not be conducting any in-person interviews. There will only be one interview which will be held over the phone.

All candidates will be finalized by December 12th, 2017. This will be a conditional acceptance on police check approval. Do NOT get a police check until informed by IR Canada.

Volunteer qualifications & requirements:

  • Candidates need to be 18 years or older
  • High emotional intelligence
  • Demonstrated experience working with children, youth, and vulnerable populations
  • Reliable, enthusiastic, open-minded, empathetic, compassionate, collaborative, and organized.

These attitudes and skills by no means ensures a candidate’s acceptance into the program; however, they are to be used as guidelines for applicants. We encourage all qualified individuals to apply.
